This means thinking about where you planted last year in order to rotate crops!
If you planted a bed garden, either raised or in the ground, try not to plant the same vegetables in the same spots. For example, I planted tomatoes in the North half of my garden and corn in the South. This year I will want to swap those crops or plant them in another bed. If circumstances will not permit this choose plant breeds that are immune to any problem pests you had last year.
Containers you plan on using the same kind of plants in this year need to have a change the dirt. This will help avoid any disease that may be harboring in the soil. If you are planting a different type of vegetable, swap out half of the dirt for fresh and loosen the soil all the way to the bottom of the pot. That way the roots will have soft, deep earth to grow roots in.
Crops with vines such as cucumbers and melons need to be rotated because the insects that plague them overwinter in the soil. Plant these as far away as you can from where you planted last year. Tomatoes suffer from viral and fungal diseases.
